Chewing Gum, Rain, and RadLab

Rad Lab

What do chewing gum, rain, and Totally Rad!’s new plug-in RadLab have in common?  Really nothing, but it’s the three things that came to my mind when I was fumbling around and found this image I took a couple years ago of Wrigley Field during a few really rainy days back in 2010.
wrigley field     It’s amazing what you can have them put on scoreboard’s these days, it’s like they new the future.  This was a a simple 4 image panoramaic that I had taken after our tour of Wrigley Field.  I just want to say that I married the most wonderful woman in the world.  It rained the entire day we were there and she didn’t complain one time, even when I just stood in the rain in awe standing behind home plate.  Needless to say, by the time we were leaving, she was ready to find the “L” and get to dryer land.  I quickly turned around and snapped the images to make this image.  One of these days I’ll actually do a real edit on this image, but when thinking of images to use to show off RadLab I immediately thought of this one.
Of course, I merged the image in Photoshop, sinfully used the render clouds to add a little texture to the sky, and did a little levels just to get the image above (oh yeah, and fixed the scoreboard).  After that though, it was time to turn to RadLab.  I simply opened the plug-in from my filter menu, played with a few options, and went from dreary to almost exactly what I was looking for. ***The frame and texture were added using OnOne PhotoFrame. TotallyRad does offer a cool texture plug-in, but I haven’t used it and honestly try to buy as few filters and plug-ins as possible***

Topaz Lens Effects

Topaz LabsBokeh seems to be a buzz word in photography these days, and just last week the guys over at Topaz Labs released a new plugin to add to their awesome line of Photoshop plugins, Lens Effects.  According to the topaz website:

Topaz Lens Effects is designed to give you the power to direct and focus your viewer’s eyes where you want them. With Lens Effects, you get advanced technology that realistically simulates the most diverse range of filters, lens and specialty camera effects – all in a single, easy-to-use plug-in that eliminates the need for additional, expensive equipment.

I’m not sold on “eliminating the need for additional, expensive equipment,” but I will admit that I think me and Lens Effects are going to spend a lot of time together.  I’ll be the first to admit that Topaz plugins are not always the most intuitive plugins out there.  However once you play around for a bit and get used it, I would dare say that they are some of the most powerful.  And Affordable!  You can buy their entire bundle of plugins for only $249 (half the price of buying them all individually).  I’ve seen people pay double for a set of Photoshop actions that don’t do half the stuff or give you half the control that Topaz products do.  Below is a quick image I played with last night.  You can see how easy it was for me to simulate a tilt/shift effect with only a couple clicks.  Honestly I didn’t even try to play around with the settings to much on this, it was that easy I didn’t need to. Just rollover the image to see the difference. **for some reason the rollover is acting up, you have to rollover just the top of the image for it to change.**
Go on over to Topaz Labs and give it a try.  You can try all their products, fully functional, for 30 days.

Navy Pier Ferris Wheel

Here’s another recent image I’ve been working on. Below is the original, then what I thought I wanted to make out of it, then what I realized just tonight that I really liked. I grew up with a mom who collected postcards, so I’ve seen tons of those old drawn cards. When I opened this image tonight to revisit it, i instantly saw it with that look.

Balmoral

All this talk about William and Kate’s wedding got me thinking about some images I took on our trip to Scotland last year.  Here’s the before and after of an image from Balmoral, one of the official residences for the British Family.

Hopefully I’ll get some more up soon.

Some recent edits…

These edits were done for Dan Phillips over at Dan Phillips Photography.  Dan sent these over to me wanting to take these images and show the bridal shop some good looking samples.  With the final images Dan landed a display in not just the store, but all three dressing rooms!

PreeVu- ProSelect Comparison

PreeVu is a new piece of software designed to be a complete workflow manager for portrait photographers.  It is new an innovative.  This is a simple side by side comparison to see how it stacks up against an established leader in Presentation software- ProSelect. I tried to be unbiased in the comparison, but I will admit that i’m tired of ProSelect and excited about all the possibilities with PreeVu. Like I’ve said before, Brad is really getting into the trenches to find what photographers really need. He’s also doing a great job of prioritizing and making sure on project is done and ready to go before starting a new one. Even today, Jeff one of the trainers spent 2 hours with me and Cindy on the phone going over the software and then Jeff even spent 1.5 hrs with me later going over some nitty gritty we were trying to figure out. All this after Brad made the trip to visit our studio last week to give us a brief overview of the software. Really great people to work with.
